Main characters of Mr Sunshine |
I have been putting off to write about this for a loooong time.
This is by far, my all time most favourite period piece Kdrama ever. Honestly, I have watched this drama 5 times (as of this writing)!
The setting was during the period of Jeoson in 1870’s to 1910, part of the story is about the love story between two people with different social status, Eugene Choi and Go Ae-shin.
Eugene Choi, an orphaned Jeoson's slave boy who had lost his parents at 9 years old to the cruelty of a noble family (their master), and he was later forced to flee to America to save his life. Later, he came back to Jeoson as the Captain in the United States Marine Corps.
Go Ae-shin is an orphaned Jeoson's noble lady, who refused to just live in the comfort and privilege of the noblewoman which commonly dictated by society. She dreamed of fighting for her country, where its fate was stuck between the powerful countries. Due to her stubbornness, she was allowed to wield the gun secretly and eventually became the best sniper.
Besides these 2 leading characters, the story also highlighted other 3 other main characters - Gu Dong-mae (a Jeoson-Japanese man), Kudo Hina (a Jeoson-Japanese woman), Kim Hui Seong (a Jeoson noble man, whose family is the richest in Jeoson after the King) .
Despite different backgrounds of these 5 characters, the drama depicted how their past and present intertwined between each other, portraying the silver lining of their relationships. Each role was executed outstandingly, forming partnerships in their own way, in the name of love, friendship, ally and comradeship.
Astonishing storyline with the touch of real historical events and figures (such as Ito Hirobumi, Five Eulsa Traitors, Park Seung Hwan, Frederick Mackenzie, Ahn Chang Ho).
The screenplay is remarkably brilliant, with some elements of humor.
Stunning cinematography. Every scene is a must watch, carefully angled with beautiful colors, scenery and other details.
Some beautiful scenes in Mr Sunshine |
Excellent main and supporting characters development.
Feel the love, the heartbreak, the tragic history and the patriotic spirits.
Seriously, a must watch!
This drama’s writer (Kim Eun-sook) and director (Lee Eung-bok) are the same person who wrote and directed the drama Descendent of the Sun (DOTS) and Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (Goblin). This awards winning drama is the 6th highest rating for cable television and the second highest average rating ever recorded for cable television in Korea (as of this writing).
